Stone Guardian: from concept to working installation

The Stone Guardian is the centrepiece of the entrance to the Haunted House at Park Ogrodzieniec. The entire project, from the first idea to a working installation, was conceived, designed and built by Artisan Aleks Company. Here is how each stage unfolded.

The brief: an entrance that starts the story

The goal was not a large decoration but an immersive installation that grabs attention before guests enter the attraction and becomes part of the architecture. Sculpture, stone texture, light, sound and smoke set the mood before visitors even reach the door.

It is an example of the model in which we deliver the complete package: we are responsible for concept, fabrication, installation and commissioning of the agreed scope. The park deals with one partner for the whole installation rather than several contractors to coordinate.

An attraction entrance is where guests wait, look around and take photos. If that moment is empty, the story only begins inside. If it is well designed, the attraction starts working on the path outside.

From an approved concept to an EPS template

Every successful themed installation starts with a clear vision. The first stage was the original concept and character design, followed by its integration with the entrance architecture and the structural design.

Once the concept was approved, an EPS template was made, and that is where the sculpture build begins. The lightweight form makes it possible to assess proportions and silhouette at full scale early on, before further layers are applied.

For installations like this, the fixing method, the connection to the architecture and the routing of services for light, sound and smoke are decided at concept stage. These decisions are hard to change once the form has been sculpted.

The layer system: maximum durability, minimum weight

The solution was designed for permanent outdoor exposure in the park, with a natural stone appearance and daily operation for the public. The system consists of six layers: a steel frame as the structure, an EPS/XPS core for a lightweight form, a glass-fibre composite shell for strength, lightweight polymer concrete as the sculpted surface, scenic painting for realism and a clear protective coating.

This build-up is not a template for every piece. Systems vary with the project and the exposure, but the principle stays the same: each layer has a specific job and none replaces the others.

Lightness matters here for practical reasons. A sculpture integrated with the entrance architecture must be securely fixed, and lower weight makes installation easier and reduces the load on the structure it is attached to.

Sculpting, texture and colour

On top of the structural layers we sculpted and textured the artificial rock, then carried out scenic painting and ageing. Decorative roots complete the piece and tie the figure to its surroundings.

The ruins of Ogrodzieniec Castle stand in the background, so the texture and colour of the artificial stone have to hold up next to the real thing. Ageing makes the figure look not like a new object but like something that has stood there for a long time.

The key sculpting work is led personally by the company's founder, Aleks Svirydzenka. He was also on site during installation.

Light, sound, smoke and commissioning

The installation features integrated lighting, original sound and music, and smoke effects. We carried out the complete electrical installation, on-site installation, testing and commissioning.

Effects in a public attraction are not only about impact. Electrics, smoke machines and lighting must be accessible for inspection and maintenance, yet hidden so they do not break the illusion. That is why we treat testing and commissioning as a separate stage, not a formality at the end of installation.

The result is a natural stone look, high strength and a lightweight structure, ready for long-term outdoor service as a permanent installation. The piece is low-maintenance and built for daily operation with the public.

Where a similar solution works

The combination of lightweight sculpture, stone texture and effects is not only for amusement parks. Similar solutions can serve as landmarks, entrance zones, hotel facades, distinctive signage, restaurant and entertainment centre interiors, photo spots, promotional and event pieces, and private commissions.

In each of these applications the principle is the same: concept, structure, layers and effects are designed together by a team that then builds and commissions them itself.

If you are considering a similar installation, photos of the site, a description of the effect you want and an indicative budget are enough to start. We can then assess whether a full package from concept to commissioning is the better fit, or work to a design supplied by an architect.

Questions and answers

Can a similar installation be made for a hotel, restaurant or private property?

Yes. Solutions like this can serve as landmarks, entrance zones, facades, signs or photo spots. We tailor the scope and layer system to the site.

Does an installation with effects need maintenance?

Yes, like any piece with technical services. We plan it so the technical layer is accessible for inspection and maintenance while being hidden as discreetly as possible within the scenery.

Do we need a finished character design?

No. On this project we developed the concept and character design ourselves. We can also work to a design supplied by the client or architect.
